Australia Day 2012 is on January 26 and commemorates the establishment of the first settlement at Port Jackson, now part of Sydney, in 1788.

To celebrate Australia Day in Maleny it has become the tradition that the Maleny Apex Club holds an “Aussi Day Breakfast” which used to held in Apex Park on the banks of the Obi Creek.

Since the development of this park and the reduction in open space area the ceremony is to be shifted to the opposite side of the creek and will be held at the RSL Hall and Cenotaph. This makes it safer from a weather point of view, but still retains the Aussie outdoor sprit.

The day will kick off with the Apex Aussie Day breakfast and continue with a naturalisation ceremony being held at 7.30a.m. inside the RSL Hall.

Approximately 20 people will officially become new Australian citizens. The ceremony will be conducted by Mr. Peter Slipper, the Federal Member for Fisher and Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives.

Following this ceremony there will be a further ceremony at the Maleny Cenetaph.

This ceremony will be conducted by the Maleny Naval Cadet Unit, TS Centaur.

This will be followed by some good old Aussie hospitality at the Maleny RSL Hall.

This is your Australia Day so get along and not only enjoy the Apex Breakfast but welcome those who have just become new Australian Citizens.

Maleny Bowls Club to celebrate Rabbis Burns Night

A passionate, inspiring, forward-thinking pioneer of his generation, Robert Burns or as he is more commonly known, Rabbie Burns, is regarded as the national poet of Scotland.

He was born in Ayrshire in 1759 and died in 1796. Starting out as a farmer he soon found his interest in writing and as a writer travelled over much of Scotland from where he gathered inspiration for his writing.

He is also well known for his political views, revolutionary behaviour, love of the lassies and of course for his famous songs and poems including Auld Lang Syne.

All of this can be celebrated at the Maleny Bowls Club on Saturday January 21st, 2012 from 6.30p.m.

It will be a night of fun, food, fun, poetry and music, fun and more fun.

The night is being presented by Maleny’s Scottish Group - Hammer On!

Woodford is a trip around the world

Woodford Folk Festival attracts artists from all four corners of the world with astounding quality and variety.

From Hanggai’s Mongolian folk music, to Brazilian Tango workshops, patrons can ‘travel-round the world’ at Woodford, with a little taste of the many different cultures and sounds here at the festival.

All the way from Japan, Dechambo are a massive hit in their home country, and are sure to make an impact at Woodford. The avant-garde Japanese alternative rock band travel from the North to South in their biodiesel bus performing 100 gigs a year. Playing a surprise acoustic show at the Pineapple Lounge today, Dechambo played upbeat fun melodies and were well-received by the audience. “This festival gets other cultures and creates a new culture, all the countries – Africa, Europe, Japan, all come together and create a new culture.

“There good artists from all over the world and it’s very exciting to be here,” said Masaomi from Dechambo.

London-born musician Adam Scriven has been volunteering and working at Woodford for the last 6 years and said it is the people who keep bringing him back. Performing for the first time at Woodford this year, Adam captured the audience as they listened attentively to his sweeping lap-slip guitar licks, intricate finger picking, lively percussive guitar rhythms and upbeat vocal styles.

“People listen at Woodford, and as a musician when people listen, the music, it is so much better, it draws the music out of us. “The opening ceremony was magic, there were 50 people up on stage and they aren’t main stream artists, but are masterful musicians and just to see those people play music… wow,” said Adam.

Then all the way from Spain, Jairo Zavala in his solo act, DePedro, wooed the crowd with his beautiful Spanish lyrics and guitar sounds. His songs, which are a series of reveries from the road, are rooted in sounds from Spain, Mexico and Latin America. “It’s beautiful to be here at Woodford, everyone is so nice and laid back, and people seem to enjoy it when I’m singing in Spanish, because it’s something different,” said Jairo.

The Dardanelles have brought their very popular Newfoundland folk sound all the way from Canada to the Woodford Folk Festival. Armed with guitars, accordions, fiddles, and bodhrans, along with an energy more often found in 3-piece punk acts then 5-piece folk acts, they will be performing their beautiful sound four times throughout the festival.

From the crack of the first note, the Dardanelles will take you there amidst the icebergs and to the music of their heritage. “Woodford is incredible, it’s wonderful, it’s such an amazing space. “I’m so excited to play tonight, it’s the greatest honour to play Newfoundland music half way across the world,” said Emilia Batellas from the Dardanelles.

There are 65 Canadian performers in total at this year’s Woodford Folk Festival and they are sure to add to the vibe with their unique, beautiful Canadian folk sounds.

The 2011 - 2012 Woodford Folk Festival is actually the 26th festival held.   It is the seventh year of The Dreaming.   From humble beginnings at Maleny the festival has turned into one of Australia’s iconic music events.

Woodford Folk Festival is one of the largest ‘folk’ festivals in the world, and is produced by the Queensland Folk Federation, a not-for-profit, community association.    It is run and organised by a committee which includes over 2400 volunteers.   It is a festival enjoyed by people of all ages and all background types.

It is held at Woodfordia, a former cattle property some 90 minute drive northwest of Brisbane.      The property is some 500-acres that have been developed into a cultural parkland dedicated to the arts, humanities and lore.

The programme consists of a diversity of Australia’s cultural, artistic and social expression with music, dance, cabaret, circus, comedy, workshops, debate, street theatre, films, forums, visual arts.     It also includes an entire children's festival and many special presentations.    Iconic parts of the festival are the spectacular opening and closing ceremonies.

Woodford Folk Festival is an annual six-day and night event running from Tuesday the 27th December through to late on the 1st January which an estimated 110,000 people will attend.

The site has infrastructure to accommodate a live-in population of over 20,000 people.

A Baroque Concert at White Eagle Lodge

Sharing Information Get Together

Cancer can be a lonely and frightening experience. It is a very difficult situation if you have to face the journey through the treatment and beyond if you have to do it alone.

A group of hinterland residents who have gone through the journey or have relatives going through the journey are to have a sharing and self help get together. The purpose of having sharing information and self help get together is to provide positive, inspirational & motivational ideas to make the cancer journey less daunting.

If you have had cancer, just been diagnosed, currently receiving treatment, caring for someone with cancer or a family member or friend and would like to be part of a group to meet informally to share information and work together to provide support, fellowship and help to others in this position, we would love you to join us for a light luncheon to discuss the need for such a group for the Hinterland Community.

The meeting will be held on Friday the 14th October 2011 between 12.30pm – 2.30pm at the CWA Hall, 1 Bicentenary Lane, Maleny.

Anti-Poverty Week was established in Australia as an expansion of the UN’s annual International Anti-Poverty Day on October 17.

The main aims of Anti-Poverty Week are to strengthen public understanding of the causes and consequences of poverty and hardship around the world and in Australia,. and encourage research, discussion and action to address these problems, including action by individuals, communities, organisations and governments.

Between October 16th and 22nd is being celebrated as Anti-Poverty week in Australia. To assist this endeavour The Friends of Ebenezer together with Mrs Marj White of North Maleny will be holding a Variety Charity Concert the day after, Sunday 23rd October. It will be held at the Maleny High School Activity Centre starting at 1.30p.m. sharp.

The funds raised will be sent to the Ebenezer Childcare Trust in Livingstone Zambia which is taking care of 405 orphaned and vulnerable children.

The Orphanage also provides for elderly grandparents endeavouring to raise their orphaned grand children who attend the Ebenezer School!

Everyone who is interested in helping to reduce poverty and hardship are invited to come for an afternoon of great music and dance.

The Sunshine Coast Youth Orchestra, Buderim Male Choir and the Talara Primary College Dance Group will entertain patrons royally!

Also during afternoon tea-time there will be a floral display by members of the Maleny Garden Club.

Pyjama Cricket back in Maleny

On Saturday 17th September at 9.30 am, two cricket teams will do battle wearing their best PJ’s in a Charity Cricket Match, battling each other in earnest to win the Maleny Golden Thong Award.

The inaugural match, played last year on the Aub Cork Oval, saw The Maleny Maulers do over Andrew Powell’s Celebrity Eleven - and all for a very good cause.

Last year, they raised $2,000. The players asked friends, family and colleagues to sponsor their runs or make a donation, and all monies collected were donated to the National Pyjama Foundation. (The Pyjama Foundation is a Brisbane based not-for-profit organisation committed to giving children in foster care the same opportunities in life as other children.

Blackall Range - Maleny Lions hold 2011 "Welcome Dinner"

The Blackall Range Maleny Lions will be holding their annual dinner to welcome new Malenyites to the area on the 14th of September at the Maleny Show Pavilion.

This event was initiated in 2006 when the Blackall Range Maleny Lions Club believed that new residents should be introduced to the various groups, emergency service, volunteer, recreation and sports that operate in the area.

Each year this event becomes more popular. Whilst it is directed towards newer residents, it does not preclude other Malenyites from attending this great night.

Michael Hooley rides to beat "Cancer"!

Michael Hooley, President of the Witta Tennis Club is about to cycle to raise funds to “Conquer Cancer”.

Here is a letter from Michael explaining his venture and how you can help.

On August 20th and 21st, The Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting the Queensland Institute of Medical Research will take place, it is a cycling journey throughout Queensland countryside that I’m embarking on to stop cancer.

The Rio Tinto Ride to Conquer Cancer is a 2-day bike ride, over 200 km up hill, wind against, it will be raining and I’ve only got a really old bike (similar to a BMX), throughout Queensland’s scenic countryside.

I will be following thousands of other riders, keeping up the rear, riding 100 km, two days in a row. As you can imagine, riding that far is not going to be an easy, so will need all the help possible. Regardless, I’m excited that I can finally do something this big in the fight against cancer.

As most family’s will at sometime or other experience a family member who is diagnosed with Cancer, so with your help we can try and find ways of preventing, curing and in some circumstances easing the palliative care time.

Your help with not only be a one off, but will remain forever in the battle to stop cancer.

It will be a challenge in a number of ways, but with my bike, my helmet, and your generosity, a real impact will be made!

Funds raised in The Ride to Conquer Cancer will support breakthrough research, exemplary teaching, and compassionate care at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, a worldwide leader in cancer research and discovery and one of the largest research institutes in the southern hemisphere, benefitting all.

Go Dotty with Ebenezer

GO A BIT DOTTY and visit the Ebenezer Fun Farmyard Art Show at the Maleny Baptist Church Shed at Cnr of Maleny/Landsborough Rd and McCarthy Rd commencing 6pm on the 19th August.

The fabulous farmyard sculptures and paintings will delight you, all of which of course will be for sale. These funds will be used to purchase farm yard animals for the Ebenezer Child Care Trust farm in Livingstone Zambia. This farm is helping to feed 405 children in our care and also our staff. Excess produce is sold to help with the running of the Ebenezer orphanage and school.

The artworks have been lovingly created and donated by local artists from Maleny and the Sunshine Coast. Artists include Janna Pameijer, Deann Cumner, Jenni Kelly, Julie Manfield, Tracey Sims, Josephine Frost, Noosa Potters, Sunshine Coast Art Group and Sunshine Clay Workers to name a few.

Entry is by gold coin donation and the exhibition will also be open Saturday and Sunday from 10am - 4pm.

Light refreshments will be available to purchase.

Maleny holds a "Real Food Festival"

The Sunshine Coast Hinterland is about to showcase its food and drink wares on Saturday September 10th and Sunday 11th when producers share their skills and products with you.

The Real Food Festival is a fantastic celebration of the wonderful variety of food that Sunshine Coast producers, manufacturers and restaurants have to offer, and a brilliant way to talk, taste and buy from them.

On Saturday September 10th many suppliers are opening up their businesses for tours, demonstrations and food tasting.

One participating business is Trevor Hart’s Cedar Street Cheeserie in Maleny. It is an artisanal cheesemaker – a small-scale producer who lovingly crafts each batch by hand. His buffalo cheese is created from buffalo milk supplied by Thompson’s Dairy at Witta.

Another such tour that will delight both young and old is the tour of the Maleny Dairies factory and farm.

For the wine lovers a visit to the magnificent Flame Hill Vineyard. You will be completely seduced by the stunning location in the middle of a productive vineyard, and the views of the ocean across the rolling green hills.

This Festival has something for everyone and is a great way for people to find out more about the best of Sunshine Coast regional food and drink scene.

This festival also offers a great opportunity to find out more about how you can obtain fresh local food.   It is no longer necessary to always depend on preserved foor from the supermarkets.

On the Sunday all the action descends on the Maleny showgrounds where the food producers, chefs and some musicians thrown in will be there to not only provide information on their products, but to entertain you.

Many of our younger generation are not sure just where our food comes from or what happens to make it ready to consume.

Kids will be helped to connect with the sources of their food.   They can also plant their own edible food seedling to take home.   This will become a continuing education project as they care for those seedlings and watch them grow.

Maleny Show Society to celerate 75 years

The Maleny Show Society will celebrate the 75th Show in 2012 on June 1st and 2nd, and to celebrate, are launching a new Charity Event. This competition is open to anyone aged over 15, male or female, married or single, and the prize will be $5000.00 worth of travel vouchers and spending money.

This is a great opportunity to assist raise funds through the Show Society to enable improvements to the grounds and facilities for the benefit of the entire community.

The Committee is currently planning an exciting array of events of the 75th show, and part of this will be a souvenir Schedule, containing historical photographs.

June long weekend to be a busy time for Artists!

Traditionally, the June Long Weekend has been a busy time for local artists as visitors take advantage of beautiful winter weather to visit the Blackall Range, so the Blackall Range Visual Artists are busy preparing for their exhibition over the Queen’s Birthday holiday.

But it’s not all hard work. This active community group enjoy getting together each week to share knowledge and encourage each other and socialize while they paint.

They also regularly provide workshops with invited artists to tutor on different art genres, to expand their interests and abilities, as well as having several exhibitions each year.

The Queen’s Birthday Weekend Exhibition at Montville provides an opportunity for the public to view and buy the paintings exhibited with the commission going toward maintenance of the Historic Hall.

Maleny's Gardening on the Edge is back!

Gardening on the Edge is a Garden Trail and Garden Market providing an opportunity for locals and visitors to the area to see a number of beautiful gardens in the area.

There will also be something for the serious gardener and those just interested in the beauty of natureat the Indoor Activity Centre at Maleny High School.

Gardening on the Edge occurs on Saturday June 11th and Sunday June 12th.   In 2010, over 1,700 people visited gardens and contributed to business activity on the Range.

The event is the main fundraiser for the Maleny Garden Club. It has been held each year since 2005 and has raised in excess of $50,000.    The money raised has been distributed to local community organisations.

There will be a garden trail of six country gardens open to the public and a garden market with specialist plant and produce stalls, camellia flower display, homemade refreshments at the Maleny High School Hall.

Generous garden owners make their properties available for the program and they manage the influx of visitors.    It is a substantial commitment on the part of the garden owners and the many volunteers needed to stage the event.   The event provides a great opportunity to learn more about gardening and the region in general.

2011 Maleny Show about to excite our town!

The Maleny Show, held this year on Friday and Saturday the 3rd and 4th June is very lucky to have two big bands being showcased in a first for Maleny and the Hinterland.

On Friday the 3rd June the Qld Police Cops in Kilts Pipe Band will be performing and leading the grand parade, and on Saturday the 4th June, the Royal Australian Navy Big Band will also perform and lead the parade.

This is a great opportunity to experience all they have to offer, and both will bring different flavours to the show.

The Show is open both days from 8am with Firworks on Friday night and the Rodeo on Saturday night.

Other entertainment this year includes the Dreamtime Reptile Pit, The Spectacular Rings of Fire Event on Friday night, Motor Cycle Stunt Riders, Electronic Cow Demonstrations, Aboriginal Dancers, Woodchops, Pavilion Exhibits, Beef, Dairy and Poultry Exhibits, Vintage and Speedway Cars, The Maleny Lighthorse Troup, Side Show Alley, Working Dog displays, Battle of the Bands, Ute Muster, Whip cracking competitions, Puppet Shows, Fashion Parades and lots lots more.

Local member for Glasshouse, Mr. Andrew Powell will be “walking the walk” on Wednesday May 18th to support the Chaplains programs at both the Conondale State School and Maleny State School.

He will be walking the 35 kilometres of the Maleny-Kenilworth Road in his electorate - from Little Yabba Creek to Maleny.     Last year he walked the same route to draw attention to the appalling state of the road.      This year the walk has a double meaning, that of assisting the chaplaincy programs and again to highlight the need for urgent upgrades on this key hinterland and tourist route.

He is asking local residents to sponsoring him by either paying an amount per kilometre (i.e. $1/km equates to $35) or to make a donation in support of this great cause.

Payment can be arranged in a couple of ways:

The Maleny Show is just around the corner - can’t you tell. The weather is wet and the nights are getting colder. That is a good sign of this great upcoming event.

The Show and the Show Ball are “THE” events of the Maleny year.

Whilst the Show is on June 3rd and 4th the Show Ball will be held at the Maleny Show Pavillion on May 21st, 2011 commencing at 7.30p.m.

Dodgy Brothers and Shonky Sheilas Coach Tour

The next Dodgy Brothersd and Shonky Sheilas coach tour will be held on Tuesday 14th June 2011.

The coach, driven by Dodgy Chris Brooker will leave the normal stops around town at 8.45a.m. for the town strays and from Erowal at 9a.m.   For those late out of bed the coach will leave the Maleny RSL leave at 9.30a.m.

When asked where this tour is headed, the coach driver, Chris Brooker said, “Why should I tell you.   You will be told when we well and truely ready.”

The coach fare is $5pp and there will be a lunch stop somewhere at a cost of just $10.00.   and monies collected on the bus.   There will even be a couple of raffles along the way, so bring another coule of bucks.   Who knows you might even win the prize.

Rainbow’s End Art Show

Months of wet weather have allowed time for lots of painting.

Six local artists from the Blackall Range Visual Artists will be exhibiting in St Mary’s Hall, Montville.

The group includes Ellie Anderson, Nicole Depczynski, Philippa Hume, Joyce Little, Marianne Reardon and Kate Websdale.

After a very successful exhibition last year, they are confident that this coming show will be of the usual high standard but even more exciting.

Why not join the artists at the RAINBOW”S END at St Mary’s Hall, Montville on May 21st and 22nd from 10:00am to 4:pm daily.

Maleny Remembers the ANZACS in 2011

As each year goes by there appears to be a greater interest in remembering the meaning of ANZAC Day in Australia.

In spite of imminent rain hundreds of people lined Maple Street, Maleny to not only pay their respect to the remaining servicemen and women who gave to ensure that Australia continues to have the freedoms that we all enjoy today, but to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

There is growing interest in the day, especially by the younger generation of Australians.

Younger Australians are not only watching the parades, but more and more all ages are taking an active part in those parades. They are thinking more about the meaning of the day.

This does not necessarily mean that War is being glorified, but people are thankful for the enjoyed freedoms paid for by many others with the sacrifice of their lives.

Maleny RSL President, Chris Brooker said, "Not too many years ago there would be 8 or 10 turn up to the Dawn Service, but this years there were hundreds."

Now there are is another new generation of Returned Service Personal to thank.

Witta House totally destroyed by fire

On Wednesday 13th April a fire totally consumed the dwelling of one of Maleny’s most popular former teachers.   The fire tore through the home about 12.30p.m. when Mrs Bergann was away from the house.   Nothing could be saved.

Joyce Bergann retired some years ago from her position as a teacher at the Maleny Pre-school.   During her many years as a teacher she taught many of Maleny’s present parents.

Fire officers from Maleny were backed up by members of Maleny Rural Fire Brigade.   Nearby buildings were saved from fire damage.

A Queensland Fire and Rescue spokesperson said that a lack of water had hampered the fighting the fire, but the fire was over very quickly.

Police from Maleny along with fire investigators attended the scene.   Whilst the cause of the fire is still unknown it is believed that there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding this incident.

There is an old saying that, “We all have a great story to tell”.

Australia is a young country and many of our older residents can remember a period of great change.

Some remember our land before electricity was an everyday service as it is today.

Younger people have stories about events that involved their family.   All of these stories form part of the heritage of Australia and should not be lost as time passes.

Other stories might just concern a person’s feelings about how they were affected by an event that had a hugh influence on their lifestyle.

Many stories would be of interest to other members of our community whilst others may be of interest only to family members, so if you just want to keep your story for your family that is OK too.

Now it is possible to easily record those stories through The Story Project – Recording your stories.

The Story Project will professionally record your conversation and give you a copy to take home.    Stories will be archived with The State Library and Sunshine Coast Libraries, and some might be broadcast on radio.

Helen Wilkinson, Director, Facilitator and woman driving the ship said.   “The Story Project is an independent not-for-profit arts and cultural organisation based in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.    We are working in partnership with Sunshine Coast Libraries and the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre.”

The Story Project’s Sunshine Coast project has received financial assistance from the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and from the Regional Arts Development Fund, a Sunshine Coast Council and Queensland Government partnership to support arts and culture.

So here is an invitation to invite someone to share a 40-minute conversation and together record an important story.

Recording are planned to be made in Maleny from 6-17 May at the Neighbourhood Centre.    Bookings are essential so think about it now.

In recent years there has been an increase in the interest that locals have paid to the annual ANZAC commemoration ceremony.   This year is expected to be mno different.

The itinery for the day is set out below.

Monday, 25 April 2011 marks the 96th anniversary of the landing of Australians and New Zealanders on the Gallipoli Peninsular in Turkey.     In recognition of this momentous and enduring event in our national history, the Maleny RSL Sub Branch invites the community to commemoration services on Sunday as follows:

4.26 am    Dawn Service at the RSL Memorial Hall followed by a Gunfire Breakfast.

9.00 am    Witta Cemetery Service.

9.45 am    Maleny Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital   Service.

10.30 am    ANZAC Day March led by the Maleny     5th Light Horse Troop.    Form up on Maple Street at corner of Fig Street at 10.15 am

Motorists please note that Maple and Bunya Streets will be closed under Police and SES control during the Maleny services.   Woolworths Manager has kindly offered the Woolworths car park to attendees (provided it is accessed outside the road closure times).

A RAAF FA18 will complete a commemorative flypast over Maleny, and a formation of light aircraft will fly over the town at 10.30 am, just as the March starts.

Another new facility for Maleny

Ben Tilley, superintendant at Headlands Golf Course, honoured members of the Maleny Golf Club last Sunday by hitting the first official putt on the Club’s recently completed practice green.

Before introducing Ben to do the honours, Club President Max Whitten talked briefly about the past and the future.

The original Maleny Golf Course (where the Maleny High School now is) was opened 80 years ago on 3 May 1931.     Its opening had been delayed by nearly a year, as the paspalum greens were unsatisfactory and had to be replaced by couch greens.

Local resident Brian Rickaby was pleased to learn that the Club’s first trophy was donated in 1930 by his uncle, Ben Rickaby.

For the first putt, Ben hit a 1.62” diameter golf ball from the 1980s (now illegal) with a Tom Morris putter manufactured in the late 1800s.     This valuable and cherised putter belongs to a Club member.   Ben convincingly showed that ancient putters require more skill than modern counterparts!

Ben Tilley first honed his skills as a young greenkeeper at Beerwah golf course.    He won awards for his environmental stewardship at Beerwah, creating habitats for wildlife and flora, as well as introducing environmentally friendly management practices.

Recent fauna surveys, along with excellent playing conditions, have shown that Ben was on the right track in nurturing a course which blended good golf with sound environmental outcomes.

He first inspected the old Armstrong Farm with Jack Newton and Maleny Golf Club members back in 2000.

Ben and Jack quickly recognised the outstanding potential of the land for a community golf course. Over the past ten years, Ben has been very generous in providing free advice to the Maleny Golf Club.

Club President, Max mentioned that the Club would shortly be lodging a Development Application with Council and was optimistic about starting preliminary site works towards the end of 2011.

Maleny Community Precinct Interpretive Trails

A major step forward in the creation of Maleny's Community Precinct has been taken, with the Precinct Advisory Group agreeing to the route and themes for the Pattemore House to Gardner's Falls and Maleny Township Interpretive Trail network.

The trail, which will commence at Pattemore House, will pass through the different types and densities of vegetation on the precinct and connect places of historical interest and environmental significance, including the platypus pool, the creek’s edge, the bunya grove, the   southern wetlands, Gardner's Falls, Pattemore House, Reynold's Crossing and The Bails.

Local Councillor Jenny McKay, who is a passionate advocate of the interpretative trail, said the four proposed walks along the trail will each describe a different element in the story of Maleny.

"The Heritage walk will allow us to tell the stories of the early European settlers.    It incorporates broad views of the precinct and surrounding areas and includes parts of the original bullock track into Maleny which crossed the Obi Obi creek at Reynolds crossing.

The Bunya Pine walk is on the south of the precinct where the land gently slopes towards the creek.    It will give the walker a sense of detachment from the wider surroundings.    It provides a wonderful opportunity to explain some of the Aboriginal history of the area including the story of Ubi Ubi the warrior after whom the creek is named.

The Obi Obi walk will be used to interpret the precinct’s environmental diversity.    It will run primarily through existing dense vegetation before crossing the southern wetlands and allowing people to view the platypi from a creek lookout; from there it will provide open views to the north of the precinct through signature fig trees.

The Maleny Township walk which will ultimately link with the Riverside Centre to the precinct will allow the story of contemporary Maleny to be told."

The next step in developing the trail is for Council to consider the advisory group’s recommendation and Cr McKay said she is hopeful that this will occur in the next couple of months and that work will begin constructing the trail in July this year.

An afternoon of Brass in Maleny

Sunshine Brass is a Brass Band that performs and contests regularly and is made up of some of the finest brass musicians in the area. Not only has this band has been playing music around the area for over 100 years, it is the oldest volunteer organisation on the Sunshine Coast.

For the first time though the band played to a Maleny audience of over 100 people at the Maleny Community Centre on Sunday March 27th.

Whilst members are all volunteers with ages ranging from early teens through to some in their seventies all are professional musicians.

The band played a wide variety of music from classical to jazz and most band members played their specific solo pieces.

Not only is this band a concert band but is also a marching brass band, having been Queensland and Australian band champions.

Sunshine Brass is always looking for new players at any level.

Putting up with the rain!

Last week-end’s mixture of rain, showers and storms saw the postponement of the official opening of the Maleny Golf Club's new golf practice/putting green until this coming weekend, 26 -27 March.

There will be a sausage sizzle with soft drinks, tea and coffee, from 9am till 1pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

So bring along your putter and suitable footwear (MGC can supply a few putters, all showing signs of an interesting history) and feel free to bring your other favourite clubs and make use of the driving range and chipping green.

The Green (seen in the attached photo) will normally be available each day from 8.30 am until dusk.

This green is a tribute to all the volunteers that worked to make it happen.

Maleny 2011 Art Awards

Maleny’s 18th Art Awards and Exhibition will be held over the three days of the Queen’s Birthday weekend, 11th, 12th and 13th June.

This year’s exhibition promises to be an enormous success, drawing entries from a wide range of artists displaying their work in several sections, including portraiture, watercolours, oil or acrylics, pastels and mixed media.

The exhibition will take place at St George’s Anglican Church, Maleny, and is generously sponsored by local businesses and private individuals. Barbara Fowler, chairperson of the organising committee, said that in tough times, it was really encouraging to see that people were still prepared to support this important cultural event.

The guest judge is Kend Grealy, a distinguished ceramist who has worked and taught in the art field for many years.

The weekend is popular for visitors and locals alike, with the Maleny Garden Club’s “Gardening On The Edge” featuring a huge display in the Activities Centre at the High School and including several open gardens in the district on the Saturday and Sunday. Local residents are encouraged to invite friends up to the Range for this weekend, as there will be plenty to see and do.

Another Ebenezer Fundraiser on the way!

The Sunshine Coast Youth Orchestra will once again perform a variety concert at the Maleny State High School Activity Centre. The Orchestra on this occasion will be accompanied by the Buderim Male Orchestra.

The concert will be held on July 24th commencing at 1.30p.m. and is being co-ordinated by Marjorie White.

The concert will also feature the Sunshine Coast Academy of Dance and Dramatic Arts and Ms Bev Hand, local aboriginal story teller.

This follows a successful concert in 2010 with the funds raised going to the Friends of Ebenezer to help support the Ebenezer Orphanage in Livingstone, South Africa.

Tickets will go on sale in June and will cost $20.00. What a great way to enjoy the afternoon and make a difference to young orphans at the same time.

Maleny Wood Expo Planning well underway

The Maleny Wood Expo - “From chainsaw to fine furniture” for 2011 will be held at the Maleny Showgrounds on April 30th and May 1st.

This event is run by Barung Landcare and the events aim is to showcase the work of the region’s finest wood artisans and to promote sustainable timber use.

Organiser, Steve McLeish says, “Visitors can see the whole ‘wood story’ – from purchasing native timber tubestock and talking farm forestry to mobile milling and the end product, the finished furniture.”

He continued that Barung Landcare has announced that The Wootha Prize competition is back again in 2011.

The winner of the Wootha Prize will receive $1000 ash, a trophy and the option of a free site at the 2012 Maleny Wood Expo. The runner up will receive $300 and third place $200.

In order to open the prize to more woodworkers, the 2011 Wootha Prize competition is not a themed competition. But all entries must have been made within the past two years, and must fit within a one metre square footprint with a maximum height of 2500mm.

Expressions of Interest for the Wootha Prize must be received by Barung Landcare no later than 1st March 2011, and successful applicants will be notified soon after.

Maleny Rotary Club promoting bowel cancer screening program

The Maleny Rotary Club is presently promoting better health by sponsoring the annual bowel scan programme.

Rotary Bowelscan programmes are run across Australia, with Bowelscan kits available now through the Maleny Rotary Club or Maleny Amcal Chemist.

Bowelscan is an annual Rotary programme which aims to reduce the lives lost to bowel cancer. Bowel cancer remains the second biggest cancer killer in Australia today. Over 80 Australians die from the disease each and every week.

Colorectal cancer is the commonest internal cancer affecting both sexes in Australia and is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer related death. On average one in 19 Australian men and one in 27 Australian women will develop colorectal cancer by the age of 75 years.

Nominations for the 2011 Sports Awards are in With the close of nominations, organisers of the 2011 Maleny Sports Awards report that 30 nominations have been received from Maleny clubs for the five different awards.

This is a great testimony to the variety, dedication and skills en- compassed within the wide array of clubs in our community. We are indeed lucky to live in a district with so many dedicated clubs providing activities for our young people and families to participate in.

The new Club of the Year Award sponsored by Andrew Powell and Maleny Coachlines has proved to be a very popular drawcard. Guest Speaker for the 2011 awards night is John Connolly, former rugby union coach and the former head coach of the Wallabies.

Toyboys at work in our area!

The last few months have seen devastation to many Queensland families. Even christmas 2010 was missed by many.

Whilst many lost everything the “toy-boys” from the Blackall Range Woodies Group at Montville delivered hundreds of wooden toys to some of those families.

Already production of the next batch of toys is being undertaken.

The range of toys is diverse as it needs to be to cover a range of ages and receivers preferences. Toys such as dolls and rocking cradles, trucks - trains - aeroplanes, all those toys that were popular many years ago when wooden toys were “king”.

Once again quality colourful wooden toys are popular with younger aged children.

Long time toy producer, Dave Brewster says production on the next consignment of christmas toys has begun and the number of toys needed continues to grow.

The club is looking for new members to assist in toy making to ensure that the quota is met. On top of this project hundreds of toys each year are also donated to the Salvation Army for distribution through their efforts.

Of the 200 odd members of the club about 10 percent are women and all involve themselves in this project at some time during the year.

There are many stages to the toy making project and a person does not need any particular skills to become involved.

The first game of bowls on Maleny Bowls Club’s new artificial surface was played on Monday January 31st, 2011. The monthly jackpot pairs attracts players from other Sunshine Coast Clubs. This is the first artificial lawn bowls surface on the Sunshine Coast.

The club has been anguishing for some time about a new surface for their bowls rink. The club was being pushed by the increased costs of maintaining a grass surface and the added problem of any spray laden water runoff into Obi Creek.

Project co-ordinator, Les Bennett said, “The new surface would also provide a more true surface to play on allowing members to be better prepared when playing competition bowls.”

Club chairman, Ian Hansen said, “Myself and a few others had a roll-up last Saturday afternoon and all were suitably impressed knowing that the surface will only improve [run faster] as time passes.

The club aims to have a much busier community social day bowls diary over the coming year. If your club or business is looking for a social day out then why not organise a day of “bare foot bowls”.

We have all seen the devastating effects to many homes throughout Queensland.
Maleny Grove Retirement Village in Palm Street, Maleny is hosting a morning tea at their Club House on Tuesday February 1 to raise much needed funds for the Flood Victims.

Music and entertainment has been arranged for the morning where local entertainers have donated their time.

Local Maleny businesses have very generously donated many great prizes that will be raffled and auctioned.

Residential Co-ordinator, Lynne said, “We encourage everyone to come along and assist by providing a gold coin donation plus the opportunity of winning a number of raffles that have been provided by the local communitybusiness.”

Nominations open for Maleny Sports Club 2011 Sports Awards!

At the Inaugural Maleny Sportsmans Dinner in 2009, Vince Carbery and Len Lowe jointly won the Sportsperson of the Year Award. The judges awarded both for 50 years of continuous service to Maleny cricket and tennis, a mind-boggling achievement. At last year’s awards dinner, Patrick Campbell from the Maleny Swim Club scooped the pool, the Maleny Bowls Club men’s team won the Team of the Year Award and the Swim Club also took out Administrator/Volunteer of the Year Award with Therese Campbell.

Who will take home the honours at the 2011 Maleny Sports Awards?

Nominations are now open and all Maleny District Sporting and Recreational clubs and their members are eligible to enter; the MDSRC awards organisers encourage as many as possible to participate in this great sporting event for the Range.

It’s also an evening of great entertainment, with guest after-dinner speaker Wallabies Coach John Connolly, and the ever unpredictable antics of live-wire MC Simon Denver.

Clubs may nominate for any or all of the following awards:

The Awards winners will be announced at the 2011 Sportsman’s Dinner, Maleny Show Pavilion on Saturday 26th February.

Tables of 8 and a few of 10 are available and seating will be limited to the Pavilion capacity so early dinner table bookings for the evening, especially from the nominating clubs, are advised.

A bit about our Guest Speaker

John (Knuckles) Connolly

Rugby Union coach and former coach of the Wallabies, John “Knuckles” Connolly is one of Australia’s most successful coaches. There isn’t a team that John has coached that has not experienced a winning streak.

As a popular dinner speaker, his clever wit is captivating and you’re guaranteed to wake up the next morning still giggling at a joke you just got!

John Connolly was born in Queensland in 1951. John started playing rugby at Marist Brothers, Ashgrove QLD during his high school years. Like most boys, he would play football during the winter and cricket during the summer. After graduating, he went on to play for Brothers Rugby Union Football Club after playing a couple of seasons of League.

As a rugby player, Connolly played hooker for the Brothers club in Brisbane. His first major coaching position was with the Brothers club in Brisbane in 1983, taking the team to two premierships. In 1989, Connolly took up a coaching position within the Queensland Rugby team. In 1991, Connolly served as an Australian selector. During his time with Queensland, the side won the Super Six in 1992 and the Super 10 Championship in 1994 and 1995.

In 2006 Connolly was appointed as the new head coach of the Australian team. In his first Test in charge, Australia defeated England in the first of two games in Australia. Australia then finished second in the 2006 Tri Nations Series.

He got his nickname, ‘Knuckles’, as a nightclub bouncer in Darwin years ago.

Maleny Scout Group to fold!

Unfortunately the Maleny Scout Group has had to close its doors because we have been unable to attract adults into the role of leaders for Cub and Scouts.

Maleny has been very fortunate over a long period of time that there have been a number of dedicated people willing to take on the task of Scouting Group Leaders, but that is no longer the case. The Group has tried for some time now to locate a person willing to lead this group of Maleny youngsters, but this search has been to no avail.

The group had been going prior to WW1 with interruptions during WW1 and WW2. The group was registered on 27 May 1927.

The group lost their scout hall (the old RSL Hall that they paid 75 pounds for in 1947) in Bicentenery Lane in 2003 when the Maleny Community Centre reclaimed the hall and land that they hold in Trust for the Maleny community.

This had been the start of the death knoll for the group as we had been unable to fi nd suitable premises to meet and store our gear on a permanent basis.

From 2005 the Maleny Girl Guide Hut was used as the “scout’s Den”. In 2008 the Maleny Historical Society offered the use of their site in McCarthy’s Road, Maleny for the group to meet and have their storage container with all the groups camping gear. This arrangement has continued until the present day.

Karen Binstead, District Commissioner Beaver Masters District said, “We thank the Maleny Historical Society for all the support that they have given the group over the last couple of years.”

The youth members have transferred to Landsborough Scout Group which meets at the Rocky Creek Campsite, 3246 Gympie Road South, Landsborough.

Cricket was the winner!

The Maleny Maulers Cricket team took out the inaugural “Dirty Thong” award in a fiercely competitive game at the Maleny Showgrounds on Saturday September 18th, 2010.

The game is the first of what is expected to be an annual charity cricket match between Maleny “has been” cricketers and a celebrity team led by Andrew Powell, the local state member of parliament and Peter Slipper, local Federal member.

Proceeds of the day were generated for the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary and the Maleny Sports and Recreation Club funds for provision of sportsfields on the Maleny Precinct.

Whilst the Maleny Maulers were the official winners of the day, the real winner was cricket played in a social environment.

Organiser of the event, Gail Denver said, “This is sure to become an annual event.”

Pyjama Cricket comes to Maleny

On Saturday September 18th, Andrew Powell’s Celebrity Cricket Eleven will be challenging The Maleny Maulers to a one day match to raise money for the National Pyjama Foundation and the 4 new football fields on the Maleny Precinct.

The fearless and magnificent Maleny Maulers - a team of colorful local social cricketers, is to be led by Captain Courageous Simon (can’t bat, can’t bowl and can’t field - so an all-rounder) Denver.

They will be doing battle against Andrew’s very shaky coalition of state and local politicians, more Maleny locals who think they can play cricket and with the odd celebrity as a ring–in.

Willows will be wielded, sledges will be sledged - and the rules will be made up as they go. They have lined up a retired first class umpire for the day.

The Maleny Maulers team consists of: Ewen Sweeting, Jim Cossins, Tom Cossins, Paul McKay, Nathan Edwards, Kelly Cork, Kevin Boritch, Steve Chaddock, Matt Babaravich, Brett Klease and Will Kingham.

MDSRC is hosting the day, providing an all day barbecue, refreshments and licensed bar and is asking Maleny’s community organisations and businesses to sponsor a player, for any amount they choose “We’ll be contacting our affiliated clubs and asking them to sponsor a player and come along on the day with their families and support their player - this is going to be a great family day of fun, social cricket and all funds raised from the sponsored players and the barbecue will be going straight to the plans for the new fields” said MDSRC President Mike Norman.

The players from both teams are busily collecting pledges from their friends and family for their runs on the day, and that money is all going to the Pyjama Foundation. In the spirit of fun, they will also be wearing pyjama bottoms as their team colours!

Local state M.P., Andrew Powell is being very cagey about who is in his team, as the rules clearly state that you to have a couple of “Lefties” in your team... so a coalition has been forged!

Already rumours are flying around; apparently, by a creative use of the Gerry Mander, he now has 16 players in his eleven-man team.

Next week we’ll be letting your know just who Andrew has got lined up to play.

The Kids from Ebenezer

Where is that money going and what is it used for?   Here is an excerpt from an email received from those in Livingstone, South Africa telling us of their lives.

Earlier in the year the Ebenezer Foundation purchased a farm on the outskirts of Livingstone, so some members of our group are active in planning for the development of the farm.

The Baby Home is now fully plastered, the electric wiring is done and tomorrow we will start on the ceiling.    Very soon babies will find a loving home in this place. Truly they will have, “ A Place to call Home and someone to call Mother.”
We have planted 2370 tomato vines, which are now flourishing.    Our first pickings were 400 kg each week, but yesterday it went up to 680 kilograms.    All were sold immediately.

I didn’t even get to bring one home for a salad, the demand is so high!    All this when the vines are still growing!

Maleny Singers show "Patience"

The Maleny Singer’s new production, "Patience" will be commencing with a Gala Night on Friday18th June from 6pm with tables of eight and the usual prize for best dressed table.

Don’t forget to bring a hamper (food only) there will be a licensed bar operating.

Other performances will be a matinee on Sunday 20th June at 2pm, an evening performance on Saturday 26th June at 6.30pm and a further matinee 27th June at 2pm.

Afternoon tea provided by the ladies of Maleny Hospital Auxiliary will be available at both matinee performances.
